A Letter from Our Executive Director, Dave Nelson, about the TCS Decatur Art Show

The Community School (TCS) is a unique program. We support the education and transition-to-independence of adolescents and young adults who are on the autistic spectrum. The people we support have a wide range of goals, from living independently to becoming employed to graduating college. All of them have a desire to be part of a community, and we actively support their social-emotional growth to help make achieving all of these goals more probable.

People Came!TCS has been part of the Decatur community for over ten years. Over the next several years, we hope to be supporting a growing number of autistic adults living successfully in Decatur, a place we believe to be wonderfully suited to the needs of many people we serve. Decatur is accessible, inclusive, friendly, and creative.

We encourage you to learn more about us. We would like to meet community members who want to know more about our work and who can help us become more integrated into the fabric of Decatur. We are also always looking for donors (of course) and volunteers to support our mission. Please don’t hesitate Mr. MB Gallery Displayto reach out to me, Dave Nelson, to talk about our organization and where we’re headed, and how you can be a part of our journey.

This art show will provide you a glimpse into the lives of some of the people we support. In my years of raising an autistic child of my own and working with a range of adolescents and young adults, I have learned that everyone has an interesting perspective, and seeing through the eyes of another is a rewarding (and sometimes challenging!) experience. It is also an excellent way to understand the human condition more deeply.

Please enjoy this show!
